Meta Marie

Sofia could well have called it 3 1/2. The contemporary music gimmick can be cheesy cool (Ladyhawke, Highlander), even brilliant (Moulin Rouge), but in this context it is the connective tissue of the film. If she'd not had Gang of Four underscoring party montages, Sofia might have just included the cameras and the booms in the shots.

Artifice is the subject. In our Rameau reduction at ARTSaha!, we joked that in his operas there's always music to presage any event that happens. Sometimes, you'll get two or three pieces that simply prepare you for whatever action eventually takes place, and those stifling rigors of routine are the germ of the film.

Rameau makes a few appearances, as well he should, and the soundtrack makes deft use of everything from Couperin to the faux Baroque music of Dustin O'Halloran. The king is crowned to The Cure, and Bow Wow Wow makes no less than three appearances, the highlight of which is the remixed "Fool's Rush In".

This movie might be a transition into a new type of form. It's something i've been calling a "Preview-movie" or "Trailer-movie" where dialog and even narrative string are subordinate to sound, visuals, and the timing thereof. Examples of this form are more abstract than those with defined linear narratives.

"Marie Antoinette" still has a strict linear program, sure, but the telling of the story is far less dependant upon dialog and other traditional forms of character development. The main character is defined by her environment rather than by what she says. What results is a very expressive and relavent portrayal of the situation of the young queen.

Consider the fact that the preview to "Man of the Year" is a better movie than the movie itself. The pacing is more controlled, more economical, and therefore the comic beats are far more successful.

This new type of movie is therefore more akin to the structure of music. When you aren't bound by defined programatic linear narrative you are free to create something more direct and more expressive.
