Sting Gets His Steeleye Span On

While he's no Maddy Prior, it doesn't really matter. The spirit of his effort is spot-on, and yes, he's got to sell the thing; so, that leads him to say absurd things like John Dowland was the 'first singer-songwriter'.

But who cares? It's just a treat to see Dowland's music get the full court press by a label as dull as Deutsche Grammophon and a one-named superstar (That doesn't mean we want to see Cher covering Hildegard, though).

"Have You Seen the Bright Lily Grow"

"Can She Excuse My Wrongs"

More absurd comments - one of the papers in the UK carried the headline 'Sting rescues lute composer from obscurity', so I was at least expecting him to cover Ry Greene, or someone similar, rather than the least obscure lutenist of them all.

Ho hum. Anyway, good on Sting; Dowland's songs are tough enough I think for all manner of treatment and about time one of England's greatest composers got some popular press.
