ANALOG @ an Die Musik Tomorrow Night

Longtime member Jason Taylor is visiting from Japan, and he joins ANALOG arts ensemble for a concert at Baltimore's An Die Musik tomorrow. The program features his original music and arrangements, along with pieces by Crumb, Feldman, Wolff and Martin.

The concert will include original works and the intuitive music of Karlheinz Stockhausen, as well as an interactive performance of Robert Ashley's theatrical piece 'She Was a Visitor'. Throughout the concert, artist Cody Griffith will generate real-time visualizations of the music. The rest of the ensemble will include trumpet, trombone, tuba and theremin.

ANALOG to play Honfleur Gallery Concert Series - February 7


Join ANALOG arts ensemble as it plays the Honfleur Gallery Concert Series in Washington, DC on February 7 at 7:00 PM. ANALOG will perform contemporary selections from Beethoven to Roussel, featuring Magaly Seay (viola), Todd Thiel (cello) and Marcia Kämper (flute).

Member News: Emil Chudnovsky and Michael Sheppard in summer benefit recital

ANALOG members Emil Chudnovsky (violin) and Michael Sheppard (piano) will be featured in a summer benefit recital and chamber music party this weekend in Washington, DC. The schedule includes a Eugene Ysaye 150th Anniversary Concert, featuring selections from Emil Chudnovsky and Michael Sheppard’s “Emperor of the Golden Age” recording.

Member News: Christina Carr to star in Il Trovatore

Mark your calendars: This fall ANALOG member and mezzo-soprano Christina Carr will play the role of Azucena in Verdi's Il Trovatore at the Taconic Opera (New York).  The production will kick off the 2008-09 season with just two performances on October 18th and 19th.

Marcia Kamper featured in "b" newspaper


ANALOG Co-Director Marcia Kamper has been featured in the June 16th issue of Baltimore's "b" newspaper. A flutist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Marcia and her colleagues promote the orchestra's outreach effort to new audiences.

ARTSaha! 2008 schedule released!

ARTSaha! - Omaha's only new music festival - returns for a 5th year! Join ANALOG arts ensemble as we 'Set Sail for the Sun' from September 3 through 13, paying tribute to the late composer Karlheinz Stockhausen with U.S. premieres of two of his works.
The festival schedule includes:
  • Guest artists Monument Piano Trio, The Microscore Project, and dung (a trumpet choir).
  • Several performances of music by Karlheinz Stockhausen, including the U.S. premieres of 'Cosmic Pulses' and 'Friday's Greeting' by Karlheinz Stockhausen.

    Vinca Wins Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland

    Vinca Quartet

    Analog just funded Vinca Quartet's trip to compete in the 8th Premio Paolo Borciani International String Quartet Compeition in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

    We are very pleased to announce that Vinca won the Prize of Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland, which comes with a 10 day residency at the International Chamber Music Course for Ensembles Schloss Weikersheim. From 11 - 21 September they will be studying with the Artemis String Quartet.

    Member News: Ken Bales Plays Bemis



    Ken Bales, Chairman of the Iron Composer Omaha competition, is playing at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art tonight.

    The performance is part of their Creativity 08 festival. Ken's performing ambient music with Drue Humphrey, who was last seen at ARTSaha! 2007, furiously editing the MIDI track for Ballet Mécanique.

    Member News: Ken Bales & Joe Drew to Present @ UNO's European Studies Conference

    Ken Bales & Joe Drew will present two ARTSaha-related papers at the 33rd Annual European Studies Conference at the University of Nebraska at Omaha this October.

    Ken's paper, "An Art of Noises: Italian Futurism and Its Influence on European Experimental Music after World War II", is inspired by ARTSaha's 2007 lineup.

    Joe's paper, "The Artist Formerly Known as Stockhausen", reflects the content of this year's festival, and takes its title from the series of posts he's written on ANABlog about the composer's career

    Kamper and Sheppard at MICA's Concert Lab


    ANALOG's Marcia Kamper joins Monument Trio's pianist Michael Sheppard for an evening of music and animation at MICA's Concert Lab next Tuesday, May 6 at 7:30 PM. The works of new music composers, including Berio and Takemitsu, will be accompanied by real-time experimental animation. The concert will take place at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Falvey Hall, 1301 Mount Royal Ave., Baltimore. Admission is free.

    University of Nebraska at Omaha

    Five student composers (ages 18-26) will be chosen to compete in person.

    PRIZES
    First Place - $500
    Second Place - $250
    Third Place - $100


    Entry Requirements
    • Submit one representative score that was composed within the past five years.
    • Submit a cover sheet with your name, address, phone number, and email address.
    • Deadline for receipt of submissions (not postmark) is June 15, 2008.
    • Send scores via mail to Iron Composer Competition, c/o Ken Bales, Department of Music, University of Nebraska at Omaha, Omaha, NE 68182-0245 or via email at kbales@unomaha.edu. Electronic submissions MUST be in the form of a PDF.
    • There is no entry fee.

    Five finalists will be selected by a panel and notified that they will participate on or before July 15, 2008. Finalists will be given the option of free housing with a local host and reimbursement for up to $300 of their travel expenses to Omaha.

    Iron Composer Omaha Student Competition Rules and Procedures

    • Composers between the ages of 18-26 (on September 4, 2008) who are currently residing in the United States are eligible.
    • Only those composers who submit a cover sheet and scores that are received by the competition officials on or before June 15, 2008 are eligible.
    • Composers must be available to participate in the event on September 4, 2008 between 10:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. at the Strauss Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
    • At 10:00 a.m., composers will be given a specific instrumentation and the “Secret Theme Ingredient”, which could be any kind of musical raw material, such as a chord progression or a found object.
    • Composers will have five hours to compose the work and produce a score and parts.
    • The facilities of the UNO Department of Music computer lab will be made available to finalists. Those computers are loaded with Finale 2006 and are connected to a printer. All scores and parts prepared on personal computers must be converted to PDF’s in order to print in the UNO facilities.
    • At 3:00 p.m., music must be submitted to ANALOG arts ensemble for rehearsals.
    • All works will be performed and judged at the Final Ceremony, which will take place at 7:30 p.m.
    • Judging will be done by a 3-person panel. Judging will be based on the following point system:
    o Use of the Secret Ingredient: 15 points
    o Originality: 15 points
    o Technical Command: 10 points
    o Overall Presentation: 10 points
    • The composer with the highest number of points will be awarded first place, the second highest number of points will be awarded second place, and the third highest number of points will be awarded third place.
    • In case of a tie, the contestant who scores highest on the Use of the Secret Ingredient and Originality will be awarded the prize.
    • The decision of the judges is final.

    "I was surfing ArkivMusic and found a long out-of-print recording of the Melos Quartet playing Schumann and Brahms," said Omaha Symphony principal violist Thomas Kluge. "My former teacher played viola for Melos, and I can't tell you how much it meant to me to find that recording."
