194142434445's Back!
Don't know if our reposts had anything to do with it, but one of the best experimental blogs has returned with a bang. Over the weekend, 194142434445 managed to post 7 different albums by Mirror, including:
A Pilgrim's Solace

As we do with the Avant Garde Project, we'll repost what we can in more user-friendly mp3's, because we think more people should hear the stuff that these guys go to great lengths to post.

Theater of Eternal Music, Dream House 78' 17"

In 1974 the couple (LaMonte Young/Marian Zazeela) were approached by French experimental label Shandar to record a Theatre Of Eternal Music album. The resulting Dream House 78' 17" again featured two side-long pieces. Jon Hassell (trumpet) and Garrett List (trombone) joined the couple for a rendition of 13 1 73 5:35 - 6:14:03pm NYC, excerpted from Young's epic, continuous performance work The Tortoise, His Dreams And Journeys, while the second side was taken up with a further Drift Study. Hassell's and List's contributions to the Tortoise piece grafted fresh flesh on to Young's original vision, coaxing the eternally slumbering tortoise to poke its head out of its jewel encrusted shell and sniff the city air. There is also more than a hint of the massive influence that classical Indian singer Pandit Pran Nath had on Young's music during this period. The assembled voices tuned to their sinewaves and instruments eventually swell into a mass chorus of Asian adopted drone that rolls gently back and forth to produce a deep trance effect. -- The Wire

Harry Bertoia, "Continuum"

In the early 1970's Designer and Sculptor Harry Bertoia and his son Val, made hundreds of sound sculptures. These sculptures represent Harry Bertoia's formation of Sonambient®.
Sonambient® was Bertoia's term to describe the spatial and tonal environment created by these sound sculptures.
Harry Bertoia created these sculptures of different shapes, length and thickness in order to achieve a range of gentle and sharp sounds. He experimented as a way to seek harmonic balance with the metal, resulting in pure, unique tones.
When touched, struck or brushed, these sculptures became abstractions of sound as they sway and knock against one another. The sounds are organic and mysterious, as tones resonate and flow into each other.
The completed Sonambient® also consists of gongs and suspended sonic-bars. Within his renovated barn, Harry made more than 360 magnetic-tape recordings -- Bertoiaharry.com

Paul Panhuysen & Johan Goedhart, "Long String Installations"
...Long string instruments have been a popular form of working with the coupling of sound and space as a compositional subject. The basic principle they work upon is the amplification of longitudinal waves in strings rather than transverse waves. That is, what is heard is the expansion and contraction of the length of the string, not the perpendicular displacement of the string. Thus, long string instruments can actually be "played" by the wind, by sounds travelling through the air, or by merely brushing the string horizontally. Long string instruments exist all over the globe, with instruments on the Isle of Wight, Nova Scotia, New Zealand, Australia and germany. Some Americans who have worked in this medium are Ellen Fullman, Terry Fox, Phil Niblock, Tom Johnson, and Alvin Lucier....

Arditti/Scelsi, Quartet No. 3
Gorgeous recording of gorgeous music, courtesy of 194142434445, which also furnished the LaMonte Young & Street recordings we just posted. They describe themselves as an "Avant blog for experimental music fans", but they're threatening to stop posting because no one's paying attention. So give them a visit and keep the flow of killer avant music coming.
