No Schoenberg, but Plenty of Marley
You probably don't score record box office by having your lead listen to Schoenberg. We were pleased to see that this latest version of Robert Neville is still profoundly attached to music. It just happens to be that he only listens to Bob Marley. He sings "Three Little Birds" as he bathes his dog. When he meets the first human he's seen in four years, he tells her that Catch a Fire is the greatest album ever made, and he gives a little history lesson on Bob's relevance to their current situation before he plays "Stir It Up".
For our money, Marley is just as timeless as Schoenberg. So, it's an equal trade, and it was a real hoot to see that at least one of the onscreen firsts we mentioned made the cut. Apparently, you can defy some conventions and still rake in the dough.
