Progressive Prokofiev

Before they formed Brand X, Jack Lancaster and Robin Lumley gathered a "mindbottling" cast of musicians to record a progressive rock version of Peter and the Wolf. About half of the album are rock excursions on Prokofiev's tunes, and his organizing concept of instruments portraying the characters is left intact.

Instead of a clarinet portraying the cat, we get Stephane Grappelli's violin. (Yes, that Stephane Grappelli!) The wolf is portrayed by Brian Eno on synthesizer. When the hunters arrive, they are still characterized by percussion, but here we get Jon Hiseman, Bill Buford, Cozy Powell & Phil Collins all on the same track. Like any good prog album, there is a wide variety of material. There's even a lovely threnody for the supposedly dead duck. The rollicking "Peter's Chase" is as good a track to sample as any. The album's been reissued by Verdant Records and is available on iTunes.

The Cast:
- Narrator / Vivian Stanshall
