You either burnish your earnestness with sleigh bells, strings, and platitudes galore and produce a gorgeous song like "Donna & Blitzun" as Badly Drawn Boy did, or you wear your cynicism on your sleeve and produce an equally wonderful song with the dearly departed Kirsty MacColl and call it "Fairytale of New York" as only the Pogues could.
