OLIVER BREWER
Composer & Director of ComplineNYC
ANALOG's newest member, Oliver is an accomplished singer who is launching ComplineNYC as an effort to bring to New York City a public offering of meditation through Gregorian Chant. Compline is a 1000-year-old liturgy of night-time songs and prayers from the monastic tradition that divides the day into eight times of communal worship. Compline is the last of these monastic “hours” focusing on themes of reflection, rest, and protection. Its texts and accompanying melodies are some of the most profound and universal in the Christian rite.
Some of the songs invite a time of inward, personal contemplation, and other songs serve to build a spirit of community. Participation can vary from merely observing, to sharing in the drones accompanying chants, or to singing the modal melodies that lend themselves to communal singing.
ComplineNYC draws upon the ancient musical traditions of sung prayer and the themes of this Night Office to develop a unique encounter for New York City. Members of the project gather on selected evenings to present these chants in public spaces. It is an endeavor that seeks to provide opportunity for spiritual expression through the inimitably transcendent qualities of Gregorian Chant.
