Analog just funded Vinca Quartet's trip to compete in the 8th Premio Paolo Borciani International String Quartet Compeition in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

We are very pleased to announce that Vinca won the Prize of Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland, which comes with a 10 day residency at the International Chamber Music Course for Ensembles Schloss Weikersheim. From 11 - 21 September they will be studying with the Artemis String Quartet.

Ken Bales, Chairman of the Iron Composer Omaha competition, is playing at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art tonight.

The performance is part of their Creativity 08 festival. Ken's performing ambient music with Drue Humphrey, who was last seen at ARTSaha! 2007, furiously editing the MIDI track for Ballet Mécanique.

Ken Bales & Joe Drew will present two ARTSaha-related papers at the 33rd Annual European Studies Conference at the University of Nebraska at Omaha this October.

Ken's paper, "An Art of Noises: Italian Futurism and Its Influence on European Experimental Music after World War II", is inspired by ARTSaha's 2007 lineup.

Joe's paper, "The Artist Formerly Known as Stockhausen", reflects the content of this year's festival, and takes its title from the series of posts he's written on ANABlog about the composer's career

Kamper and Sheppard at MICA's Concert Lab

ANALOG's Marcia Kamper joins Monument Trio's pianist Michael Sheppard for an evening of music and animation at MICA's Concert Lab next Tuesday, May 6 at 7:30 PM. The works of new music composers, including Berio and Takemitsu, will be accompanied by real-time experimental animation. The concert will take place at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Falvey Hall, 1301 Mount Royal Ave., Baltimore. Admission is free.

Five student composers (ages 18-26) will be chosen to compete in person.

PRIZES
First Place - $500
Second Place - $250
Third Place - $100

Entry Requirements
• Submit one representative score that was composed within the past five years.
• Submit a cover sheet with your name, address, phone number, and email address.
• Deadline for receipt of submissions (not postmark) is June 15, 2008.
• Send scores via mail to Iron Composer Competition, c/o Ken Bales, Department of Music, University of Nebraska at Omaha, Omaha, NE 68182-0245 or via email at kbales@unomaha.edu. Electronic submissions MUST be in the form of a PDF.
• There is no entry fee.

Five finalists will be selected by a panel and notified that they will participate on or before July 15, 2008. Finalists will be given the option of free housing with a local host and reimbursement for up to $300 of their travel expenses to Omaha.

Iron Composer Omaha Student Competition Rules and Procedures

• Composers between the ages of 18-26 (on September 4, 2008) who are currently residing in the United States are eligible.
• Only those composers who submit a cover sheet and scores that are received by the competition officials on or before June 15, 2008 are eligible.
• Composers must be available to participate in the event on September 4, 2008 between 10:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. at the Strauss Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
• At 10:00 a.m., composers will be given a specific instrumentation and the “Secret Theme Ingredient”, which could be any kind of musical raw material, such as a chord progression or a found object.
• Composers will have five hours to compose the work and produce a score and parts.
• The facilities of the UNO Department of Music computer lab will be made available to finalists. Those computers are loaded with Finale 2006 and are connected to a printer. All scores and parts prepared on personal computers must be converted to PDF’s in order to print in the UNO facilities.
• At 3:00 p.m., music must be submitted to ANALOG arts ensemble for rehearsals.
• All works will be performed and judged at the Final Ceremony, which will take place at 7:30 p.m.
• Judging will be done by a 3-person panel. Judging will be based on the following point system:

o Use of the Secret Ingredient: 15 points
o Originality: 15 points
o Technical Command: 10 points
o Overall Presentation: 10 points

• The composer with the highest number of points will be awarded first place, the second highest number of points will be awarded second place, and the third highest number of points will be awarded third place.
• In case of a tie, the contestant who scores highest on the Use of the Secret Ingredient and Originality will be awarded the prize.
• The decision of the judges is final.

Vinca Quartet Joins the ANALOG Family!

Vinca String Quartet is ANALOG arts ensemble's newest member. Based in New Haven, Vinca has been hailed by the New York Times as "stunning", and "worth keeping an eye on".

The quartet was formed in 2002 at the Yale School of Music and began its career working with the Tokyo String Quartet. In September 2004, the quartet was awarded the position of graduate-quartet-in-residence at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where they were assistants and protégés of the acclaimed Takács Quartet for three years.

ANALOG arts ensemble member Heather Frasch's latest piece "Segmented Fragmentations" will be performed by the Berkeley Contemporary Chamber Players on Monday, December 17 at 8 PM in Hertz Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. Advance tickets are available online, and the concert is free to Cal grad students.

The piece was created this summer for the Acanthes Festival in France/Luxembourg, and a revised version will be performed in Berkeley.

You can also find Heather onstage, performing in "Night Edge," a new work by Evelyn Ficarra.

ARTSaha! - Omaha's New Music Festival - is now underway! Come see THE FUTURE OF MUSIC NOW!

Festivities kicked off on Friday with the free-form, simultaneous performances in "Mr. Marinetti's Curiosity Cabinet," and continued on Saturday with a rare performance of the original Ballet Mecanique score and film.

Drop by and stay for a while at Monday's 24-hour marathon of John Cage's organ piece ASLSP. Joe Drew and Dolf Kamper will work the pedals of Omaha's First Central Congregational Church from midnight to midnight.

Tuesday night the Iron Composer Omaha finalists will face off as their original compositions are performed before a live audience and panel of judges. Hal France, formerly of Opera Omaha, will emcee the competition. After the prizes are awarded, stay for a concert with an eclectic selection of music from modern composers.

The action moves outdoors on Wednesday with our concert under the stars For Whom the Bells Toll at UNO's Henningson Memorial Campanile. Bring a lawn chair and relax during this performance of unexpected music for carillon.

Thursday we find music in the sounds of everyday life at our Found Sounds and Field Recordings concert. Come and find poetry in the sound of a revving engine, a baby's cry, or the garbled announcement of a subway conductor.

On Friday, ANALOG kicks off UNO's popular Ecoutez concert series with Go Figaro!, a collection of groundbreaking moments in classical music. Centered around a unique take on Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, we'll include highlights from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov, and round it out with a little Moondog.

And we go out with a bang - or a sonic boom, perhaps - on Saturday with Cowardly Old World, an audio visual extravaganza in UNO's Mallory Kountze Planetarium. We'll take full advantage of the planetarium's three screens in sharing with you visions of the future along with a program of electronic music, presented through a massive sonic diffusion scheme.

ARTSaha! - Omaha's new music festival - returns for a week of exciting concerts and arts events from September 7 - 15. This theme of this year's festival is Futurism. ARTSaha! will take audiences backwards and forwards in time to view, hear and experience different visions of the future.

Most events will take place at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), our partner in the festival.

Highlights include:

Ballet Mecanique: a rare performance of the rhythmically chaotic 1924 score to the short film Ballet Mecanique, which we will screen simultaneously. The score is so complicated it takes MIDI technology to make possible the synchronized performance of multiple player pianos, which will be accompanied by live pianos and a battery of percussion (propellers included!)

Cowardly Old World: an audio-visual travelogue through time to wildly differing visions of the future, taking place in the state-of-the-art UNO planetarium

Ecoutez concert: the kick-off event to UNO's popular concert series, with a program of landmark modern masterpieces including Stravinsky's 'Rite of Spring' and other works that were all ahead of their time
